Hi, I’m Kari Burmeister.

I’m an occupational therapist with more than 15 years of experience working across hospital, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, home health, and school-based settings. Throughout my career, I’ve worked with children and adults navigating physical, sensory, cognitive, emotional, and everyday functional challenges. My occupational therapy background has taught me to look beyond a diagnosis or particular skills and consider the whole person. I consider how the brain, body, environment, routines, and demands of daily life all influence the ability to participate in the things that matter to us.

Over time, my professional interests have led me to pursue specialized training in POTS and dysautonomia, interoception, and nervous system regulation, with a deeper focus on how body signals and sensory experiences influence daily life. My approach also draws from holistic and trauma-informed practices, incorporating coaching techniques that help individuals build self-awareness, recognize their needs, and discover strategies that work for them.

But the vision for Awareness Roots also grew from personal experience navigating my own invisible chronic conditions while raising children with neurodivergence and complex health needs.

Experiencing these challenges not only as a clinician but also as an individual and a parent has shaped the kind of support I want to provide: thoughtful, practical, and centered around the whole person.

My Approach

At the heart of Awareness Roots is the brain-body connection and the belief that awareness creates a foundation for growth. When we learn to notice and understand our internal body signals, sensory needs, emotions, thought patterns, and responses, we begin to make sense of how they influence the way we feel, function, and participate in everyday life. These are often the invisible skills beneath the visible task. Those skills being: self-awareness, regulation, executive function, and the ability to recognize and respond to our own needs. They can have an enormous impact on daily life but often do not fit neatly within traditional healthcare, therapies, or school-based supports.

Awareness Roots creates opportunities to explore and strengthen those foundations through education, real-life practice, and individualized strategies of building awareness to establish strong roots, then using that understanding to grow with intention in ways that work for the individual.

Individualized

Different brains, bodies, experiences, and circumstances call for different supports. Enrichment groups are kept small to create a safe and accepting environment and designed to allow for individual needs, while 1:1 support is shaped around the person and their everyday life. The goal is to meet individuals where they are rather than expecting everyone to fit the same approach.

Intentional

Everything has a purpose. Classes, strategies and supports are thoughtfully designed through an occupational therapy lens and informed by evidence-based approaches to sensory processing, interoception, executive function, regulation, and whole-person well-being. Whether learning in a group or working individually, the goal is to build understanding and make informed decisions about what works for you.
